How to play
Shh.
Bluff.
Vote.
Gather 3 to 10 players around one iPhone. The phone goes from hand to hand: everyone holds their card to see it in secret. The civilians all share one word; the impostor gets no word at all (“No word”, the default rule) or a close word (“Close word”). Everyone gives a clue, the table debates, then votes to expose the impostor. The full rules are in the app.
The two rules
On first launch, the app asks how your table plays. You can switch rules later in “Play”.
- “No word”, the defaultThe civilians share one word. The impostor gets none and knows it: their card holds “No word” where the secret should be, under the same “Your word” chip as everyone else’s. With “Hint: the theme”, on by default, every card also shows the theme, the civilians’ cards included, when the pack has one. Once voted out, the impostor gets a last chance (see below).
- “Close word”The impostor gets a word close to the civilians’. By default, nobody sees their role: the impostor only finds out at the verdict. The “Show roles” option prints each player’s role on their card. From 5 players, “+ Mr. White” (with Imposteur Premium) adds a player with no word at all, who can steal the round on their own.
Both rules play with 3 to 10 players.
First launch
- Four screens introduce the game; the last one asks how many of you are playing, from 3 to 10. (“Skip” goes straight to Home, without the steps below.)
- “Let’s go!” opens the table’s first names and avatars; “Save players” saves them.
- “How do we play?”: tap “No word” (already selected) or “Close word”. Your choice is saved, and you can switch later in “Play”.
- “Your table is ready”: “Start with …” deals the first round.
See my card again
Blanked on it during the debate or a public vote? Tap the ⋯ menu at the top of the screen:
- ⋯
- See my card again
- Your first name
Your first name shows up big for the whole table and the timer pauses. You see the same card again, then “Got it” brings back the debate or the vote. Nothing is counted or saved.
It isn’t offered during a private vote. The card also closes if someone takes a screenshot or records the screen.
The mask comes off
At the verdict, the screen goes black: the accused’s sticker appears and three knocks sound (tap to skip). The accused wears a mask, the same whatever their role. At the reveal it pops off, the color floods in and the stamp lands:
- “Found.”The civilians win the round.
- “One down.”An impostor is out and the round goes on.
- “Missed.”A civilian is out: the round goes on, or the impostors win.
- “Stolen.”A last chance paid off.
- “Tie.”Nobody is out.
A Gala Collection character wears a gold mask: same shape, same timing, so it gives no role away. With Reduce Motion on, the verdict shows straight away, without the mask.
The impostor’s last chance
In “No word”, every impostor who is voted out gets one guess at the civilians’ word. In “Close word”, only Mr. White gets one; the close-word impostor doesn’t.
What to find: the civilians’ word (Words, Question), a name for their picture (Image), or their icon or its name (Icons). The app judges the answer, not the table, and it’s forgiving: capitals, accents, an article, a plural, and one typo in a word of 5 letters or more, as long as the first letter is right and the answer isn’t another word. One answer only.
- Right: “Stolen.”The round goes to every impostor, even those already out. Mr. White’s steal wins for Mr. White alone.
- Wrong: “Missed!”The guesser is out, and the round goes on while an impostor is still in play (the civilians’ word then stays secret).
- “I don’t know”The guess is passed: “Passed.”
The Gala Collection
15 exclusive characters, included in Imposteur Premium: a velvet hoodie in their color, a gold-thread mask patch and a gemstone each. Every avatar picker ends with a “Gala Collection” section; without Premium, the Gala characters show a padlock and “See the Shop”. They’re never assigned automatically. In the Shop, “See the collection” shows them in their poses.
At the verdict, their mask is gold. And as soon as one player wears a Gala character, that round’s poster turns gold.
If Premium is no longer active, a player keeps their Gala character until the end of the round in play, then gets a free character of the same color at the next table.
